Breed traits
Friendliness
Care
Mind
Temperament
Hungarian hunters built this breed in the 1930s for icy water and thorny cover that punished the smooth Vizsla, keeping the trademark devotion intact. Expect a sensitive, biddable athlete that works all day and then drapes itself across your lap — exercise and company are both non-negotiable.
Habits & quirks
Lap arithmetic
Twenty-five kilos, zero awareness of it — if you sit, it fits.
The point
Freezes mid-stride at birds, statue-still, tail out — hardwired and magnificent.
Water first
Puddle, lake or sea: if it's wet, the Vizsla is already in it.
The vizsla narration
A talkative breed that reports its feelings in soft squeaks and grumbles.
Care
| Exercise | Ninety minutes-plus of hard daily exercise — running, swimming, field work. Walks alone won't do. |
| Company | A velcro breed that struggles alone; plan a life with the dog in it. |
| Grooming | Wash-and-wear: weekly brushing and an occasional tidy of the beard and eyebrows. |
| Training | Sensitive and eager — bright, kind methods work wonders; harshness breaks the bond. |
Common questions
How is the Wirehaired Vizsla different from the smooth Vizsla?
It's a separate breed, created in the 1930s: slightly heavier-boned, with a protective wire coat, and often marginally calmer. The devotion is identical.
Are Wirehaired Vizslas rare?
Yes — far rarer than smooth Vizslas, and waiting lists are common outside Hungary. The AKC only fully recognised the breed in 2014.
Are they good running partners?
Outstanding — an adult will match you for 10 km and ask what's next. Just build distance gradually while young joints are still developing.
