Temperament
Bred to keep German farmyards free of rats, guard the property and trot beside market carts, the Standard Schnauzer is a self-appointed manager: alert to every arrival, quick to learn, quicker to get bored. At home that means a loyal, playful companion who watches the street through the window and expects to be consulted.
Habits & quirks
The window inspector
Every passer-by is logged, and the important ones are announced.
Beard souvenirs
Whatever was in the water bowl travels with the beard — usually to your lap.
Chin on everything
The bearded muzzle gets rested on knees, tables and laptops as a gentle request.
One step ahead
Learns routines fast, then anticipates them — sometimes before you've decided.
Care
| Grooming | Hand-strip the wiry coat two or three times a year (or clip it, softening the texture) and wash the beard often. |
| Training | Give it a job early — obedience, scent work, agility — or it will invent its own management duties. |
| Exercise | An hour a day minimum, ideally with a thinking component; a bored Schnauzer is a loud one. |
| Socialisation | Naturally reserved with strangers, so meet plenty of people and dogs in puppyhood. |
Common questions
Do Standard Schnauzers shed?
Very little — the wiry coat holds dead hair until it's stripped out. The trade-off is regular grooming rather than a lint roller.
Are Standard Schnauzers good family dogs?
Yes, for families who train them — they're devoted, playful and sturdy with children. They take their watchdog role seriously, so expect announcements at the door.
What's the difference between the three Schnauzers?
The Standard is the original mid-sized farm dog; the Giant was bred up for droving and guard work, the Miniature bred down as a ratter. All three share the beard and the attitude.
