Where dog breeds really come from

The idea of a dog breed — a closed family with a written standard and a stud book you can't marry out of — is barely 150 years old, built in Britain around the first dog shows and the Kennel Club's 1873 register. Before that there were working types shaped by a job and a place, not breeds defined by paperwork. Almost every dog sold today as an ancient breed is really an old type wearing a Victorian breed on top.

The names make it worse. The Great Dane is German, the Australian Shepherd was made in the American West, and the French Bulldog started in Nottingham — breed names followed fashion, migration and old mistranslations, not the map.
