Temperament
Refined over centuries of hill work to gather sheep with a hypnotic stare, the Border Collie is motion-obsessed, endlessly quick and happiest mid-task. At home that wiring means a dog that studies you, anticipates routines and learns new skills in minutes — and, if unemployed, may herd children, cyclists and the vacuum cleaner instead.
Habits & quirks
The eye
That low, locked-on stare is pure herding instinct — flattering when aimed at sheep, funnier when aimed at the cat.
Motion patrol
Joggers, bikes and skateboards all read as escaping livestock; teach an off-switch early.
One step ahead
It learns your routines faster than you do — reach for your shoes and it's already at the door.
The crouch
Head low, tail down, creeping forward: the classic Collie stalk, even in a game of fetch.
Care
| Exercise | Two-plus hours daily, mixing hard running with real thinking — fetch alone just builds fitness for mischief. |
| Training | This brain needs a curriculum: obedience, agility, scent work or actual sheep. |
| Grooming | Brush the weather-resistant double coat once or twice a week, more during seasonal moults. |
| Health | A hardy breed overall; good breeders test for collie eye anomaly, hip dysplasia and epilepsy. |
Common questions
Are Border Collies good pets?
Only for active homes. They're wonderful with a job and daily exercise, but overwhelming for a sedentary household.
How much exercise does a Border Collie need?
Two-plus hours of physical and mental work daily. Fetch alone won't cut it — add training, agility or scent games.
Are Border Collies good with children?
Devoted to their own family, but herding instinct can surface as circling or nipping at running children. Teach calm play on both sides and give the dog a proper outlet.
