Privacy Policy

Your pet's data is yours. Here's exactly what we collect and what we never do.
The short version
- Scanning dogs and collecting breed cards needs no account. That part of the app runs entirely on your phone; scan photos never leave your device.
- Adding a pet uses a free account so your pet's records are backed up and available at app.breedquest.com. We store what you put in — and nothing else.
- BreedQuest+ (optional subscription) adds unlimited pets and household sharing. Billing is handled by Apple; we never see your payment details.
- We don't sell your personal data and we don't use your pet records for advertising. You can export or delete your data at any time; deleting your account erases it from our servers within 30 days.
Who we are
BreedQuest ("we", "us") is operated by Finday B.V., Barbara Strozzilaan 201, 1083 HN Amsterdam, Netherlands. Finday B.V. is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. Contact: [email protected].
What we collect, and when
Without an account — local only. The scanner, breed collection, and coloring work without an account. Photos you scan are processed on your device to identify the breed; scan images are not uploaded, and your collection stays on your phone. We do not receive, store, or have access to any of it.
With a free account — from your first pet. Adding a pet creates a free account so your pet's records are safely backed up and available on your other devices and at app.breedquest.com (the free plan includes one pet). When you're signed in we process:
- Account identity. When you use Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google, the provider gives us a stable user identifier and, if you allow it, your email address, your display name, and your profile photo. We use these to create and secure your account and to show who is signed in. If your provider supplies a profile photo, we save a copy on our own servers so your browser never has to request it from Apple or Google; it refreshes when you sign in again and is removed when you delete your account. We never receive your Apple or Google password.
- Your pet data. The information you put in the app — pet names, breeds, photos, weight, reminders and tasks, health records, contacts, feeding and expense logs — is synced to and stored on our infrastructure so it can reach your other devices.
- Uploaded files. Photos and documents you attach are stored so you can see them everywhere you're signed in.
- Basic technical data. Standard request logs (e.g., timestamps, error diagnostics) needed to operate and secure the service.
BreedQuest+ (subscription). BreedQuest+ unlocks unlimited pets and household sharing; data handling is the same as for free accounts. Subscriptions are billed by Apple through your App Store account: we never receive your card or bank details — only your subscription status (trial, active, expired) so the app can unlock Plus features.
Advertising (free plan). The free app may show ads and affiliate links to keep it free. Any advertising partners we use will be named here, with links to their own privacy practices, before ads go live. We do not use your pet data to target ads.
Newsletter and launch list. If you sign up for the BreedQuest letter or the launch list, we store: your email address, your language, which form and page you signed up on, any campaign tags in the link you arrived by (such as utm_campaign), the country your request came from (derived at the network edge — we never store your IP address), and the timestamps of your consent and confirmation. Signing up is double opt-in: we email you a confirmation link, and only a confirmed address gets our emails. Unconfirmed addresses are deleted automatically after 30 days. Every email we send contains an unsubscribe link; using it deletes your address immediately and permanently. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a)), which you can withdraw at any time. We use the signup context (form, page, campaign, country) only to understand which parts of BreedQuest people care about — never to build individual profiles, and never shared or sold.
How we use your data, and the legal bases
Under the GDPR, we process personal data on these legal bases:
- Performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b)) — providing the app, your account, backup and sync, the web app, and household sharing.
- Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)) — keeping the service secure, preventing abuse, and diagnosing and fixing problems.
- Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)) — where required, e.g. for any future advertising cookies or personalized ads; you can withdraw consent at any time.
- Legal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c)) — keeping records the law requires and answering lawful requests.
We do not sell your personal data, we do not use your pet records for advertising, and we make no automated decisions about you with legal or similarly significant effects.
Breeder directory. BreedQuest keeps a directory of dog breeders and kennels built from public sources: the ENCI register of certified breeders, the EuroBreeder public directory, and the kennels' own public websites. We store what those sources publish about the business — kennel or breeder name, region, breeds, website, description, and the business contact details the kennel itself publishes. We use it to help people find a responsible breeder, and to contact kennels individually about BreedQuest. It is never added to our newsletter list and never sold. If you are a breeder and want your entry corrected or removed, email [email protected] and we do it — no explanation needed.
Cookies
The website sets only functional cookies: your language and theme preferences, your cookie choice itself, and the newsletter prompt’s memory (whether you’ve visited before, subscribed, or asked us not to ask for a while). Analytics (Google Analytics, IP anonymized) and any future marketing cookies only ever load after you allow them in the cookie banner — never by default. Your choice is stored for 12 months when you accept all cookies and 6 months when you keep necessary only, and you can change it at any time via "Cookie settings" in the footer.
Where your data is stored, and security
Account data is stored on Cloudflare (Workers, D1, and R2) as our infrastructure provider. Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest, isolated per user, and access is gated by a signed session token. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
If something goes wrong. If a personal-data breach is likely to put your rights at risk, we will notify the competent supervisory authority within 72 hours where required and inform affected users without undue delay.
Who we share data with
- Infrastructure: Cloudflare (hosting, database, file storage).
- Sign-in and billing: Apple and Google, to authenticate you; Apple additionally processes BreedQuest+ payments under its own terms.
- People you choose: household members you invite and anyone you explicitly share with (e.g. a care sheet or sitter link).
- Legal: if required by law or to protect rights and safety.
We don't sell personal data or share it with data brokers.
International transfers
Cloudflare operates a global network, so your data may be processed in countries other than your own. Where personal data leaves the EEA, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
Data retention
- While your account is active we keep your synced data so it's there when you need it.
- When you delete a pet, a record, or your account (Profile → Delete account), we erase it from active systems within 30 days and from encrypted backups on our normal backup cycle.
- Server request logs are kept briefly for security and troubleshooting, then deleted or anonymized.
Your rights
If you live in the EEA, the UK, or Switzerland, you have the right to access, correct, delete, and receive a copy of your personal data, to restrict or object to processing (including direct marketing), and to withdraw consent at any time. The fastest route is in-app: Profile → Export all data, and Profile → Delete account. For anything else, email [email protected] — we respond within one month. You can also lodge a complaint with your data protection authority; ours is the Dutch Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
If you live in California or another US state with a consumer privacy law, you have equivalent rights of access, correction, deletion, and portability. We do not sell or share personal data for targeted advertising, and we will never discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
Children
BreedQuest is intended for a general audience of pet owners and is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent age in your country). We don't knowingly collect data from children.
Changes
We'll update this policy as the app evolves and note the "last updated" date. For material changes we'll provide notice in the app.
