Bred down from compact Australian Shepherds by Californian horse people who wanted full working ability in a trailer-sized dog, the MAS kept everything: the herding eye, the lightning trainability, the devotion bordering on surveillance. Same dog, new name — the breed was developed from small Australian Shepherds and renamed Miniature American Shepherd when it entered the AKC. Some registries and breeders still use 'Mini Aussie' informally.
Can a Miniature American Shepherd live in a flat?
Yes, if — and only if — you supply serious daily exercise and brain work regardless of weather. The dog cares about activity, not square metres.
Do Miniature American Shepherds shed a lot?
Yes: steady shedding year-round and heavy seasonal blows from the double coat. Weekly brushing, a decent vacuum and acceptance are the management plan.
