Temperament
Bred to bolt rabbits from rock and scrub, the Pequeno hunts by sight, scent and hearing all at once — which at home means a dog that notices everything and comments on much of it. It is lively, funny and affectionate with its people, but keeps a hunter's independent streak and a spring-loaded pounce.
Habits & quirks
The periscope pose
Up on hind legs, ears swivelling — checking the horizon for rabbits, real or imagined.
Vertical take-off
It jumps like a cat and climbs like one too; low garden furniture is merely a staircase.
Announcer of the house
Every arrival, delivery and passing pigeon gets a bulletin.
Sun worshipper
A Mediterranean dog to the bone — it will find the one warm patch on the floor and claim it.
Care
| Exercise | A daily hour of walks and free running keeps body and busy mind settled. |
| Containment | A keen jumper and digger with real prey drive — fences need height and a checked perimeter. |
| Grooming | Weekly brushing suffices for either coat type; the wire coat needs no elaborate stripping. |
| Training | Keep sessions short, rewarding and game-like — this primitive hound works with you, not for you. |
Common questions
Is the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno good with children?
Yes — it's playful, sturdy for its size and generally patient. Teach children to respect its speed and let it retreat when it's done playing.
Can a Podengo Pequeno be let off lead?
Only in secure areas. Its rabbit-hunting instincts run deep, and a fleeing squirrel will outrank your recall on the wrong day.
Do Podengo Pequenos bark a lot?
They are natural watchdogs and will announce visitors and wildlife readily. Early training and enough exercise keep the commentary reasonable.
