Dots & Boxes is the grid game from the back of every school exercise book, and it is far nastier than it looks. You each draw one line per turn; close the fourth side of a box and you claim it in your colour and go again. The trap is that most of the board plays itself, and the whole game turns on who is forced to draw the line that opens a corridor — hand your rival a chain of ten boxes and it is over. Good players lose a box on purpose to avoid it. One hosts, one joins with the PIN.
