Golden Retriever vs Labrador Retriever
Two of the world's favourite family dogs, and the pair people cross-shop most. They overlap a lot, so here's where they genuinely differ.

Pick the Golden for a softer, more sensitive dog, if you don't mind the extra brushing. Temperament
Both are gentle and people-focused, but the Golden tends to be softer and more sensitive, keener to please and a little more affected by harsh handling. The Labrador is sturdier and more boisterous, often busier and mouthier as a young dog. Neither has a mean streak, both make poor guard dogs, and both are excellent with families.
Coat, shedding and grooming
This is the clearest split. The Golden's long, feathered coat needs brushing several times a week to stay tangle-free and blows heavily twice a year. The Labrador's short double coat is wash-and-go but still sheds year-round, and a weekly brush keeps on top of it. If grooming time matters, the Lab wins.
Energy and training
Both are sporting dogs bred to retrieve all day, so both want 60 minutes or more of real exercise and a job to do. Both are among the easiest breeds to train, which is why they fill the guide-dog and assistance ranks. The Lab's food drive is a touch stronger, which makes reward-based training even quicker.
Health and lifespan
Both live around 10 to 12 years and share the same big risks: hip and elbow dysplasia, and a strong tendency to gain weight. Goldens carry a higher cancer risk with age; Labs are especially prone to obesity. For either, buy from a breeder who hip-, elbow- and eye-scores, and keep the dog lean.
Common questions
Which sheds more, a Golden or a Labrador?
Both shed a lot. The Golden's long coat is more visible and needs more brushing, but a short-coated Lab drops nearly as much hair year-round. Neither is hypoallergenic.
Is a Golden or a Lab better with kids?
Both are excellent with children when raised and socialised well. The Golden is usually a touch gentler and calmer; a young Lab can be bouncier and more mouthy. Supervise either around toddlers.
Which is easier to train?
Both are top-five trainable breeds. Labs edge it slightly on food drive, but you can't go wrong with either.
