Wet vs Dry Food
Wet food or dry kibble? Both can be complete and healthy. The right choice depends on your pet, your budget, and a few things vets actually care about.
Neither is universally better, and both can be nutritionally complete. Dry food is cheaper, more convenient and better for grazing; wet food has far more moisture, which genuinely helps cats and dogs prone to urinary or kidney trouble, and it's usually more tempting for fussy or older pets. Moisture is the real difference
Wet food is mostly water; kibble is mostly dry. For cats especially, desert animals that drink little, that extra moisture helps keep the urinary tract and kidneys flushed, which is why vets often push wet food for cats with a history of urinary problems. Dogs generally drink enough to make this less critical.
Cost, convenience and teeth
Kibble is cheaper, keeps in the cupboard, and is easy to measure and leave down. Wet food costs more, spoils once opened, and needs the fridge. The old claim that kibble cleans teeth is overstated: the mild abrasion helps a little, but nothing replaces brushing or a vet-approved dental diet.
How to choose
Read the label for the words "complete and balanced" for your pet's life stage, which matters far more than wet versus dry. If your pet is fussy, overweight, older, or has a urinary or kidney history, that usually tips the choice, and your vet can say which way. Mixing wet and dry is perfectly fine.
