Looks and build
Up close, the differences show. The Boston Terrier is tuxedo-marked, finer-boned and taller on the leg at 5–11 kg. The French Bulldog is stockier and heavier at 8–14 kg, with a broader head and famously wide-set bat ears. The Boston looks like a little athlete in a dinner jacket; the Frenchie like a small tank.
Health and breathing
Both are brachycephalic and can suffer breathing trouble, overheating and eye problems, but the Boston's slightly longer muzzle often means it breathes a little easier. The Frenchie is more extreme and more prone to spinal issues too. With either, buy from a breeder who selects for open nostrils and sound airways, and never leave them in the heat.
