First, the MDR1 gene: a mutation common in herding lines can make a dog dangerously sensitive to some ordinary medications, and a cheap DNA swab tells you where your dog stands — so test, and tell your vet the result. Second, ask the breeder about eye and hip screening in their lines. Beyond that, keep this busy dog properly exercised and mentally worked; an under-stimulated MAS invents problems that are their own kind of trouble.
