Temperament
František Horák crossed the Scottish and Sealyham Terriers to build a narrower, more cooperative earth dog that could hunt in a pack without picking fights — and it shows. The Cesky keeps the terrier's nose and nerve but trades the swagger for composure: reserved with strangers, gently playful at home, and unusually willing to listen.
Habits & quirks
Pocket hunter
Offer a scent trail and the sofa companion vanishes, nose down, on business.
The considered response
Commands are weighed briefly before being obliged — it likes to conclude it agreed.
Polite reserve
Strangers receive a courteous once-over rather than a party.
The dinner audit
Few breeds monitor the kitchen with such quiet professionalism.
Care
| Grooming | The soft coat is clipped, not stripped — schedule a trim every six to eight weeks and brush the furnishings between. |
| Feeding | Ceskys are enthusiastic eaters that gain weight easily; measure meals and ration the treats. |
| Exercise | A good daily walk with sniffing time, plus play — moderate needs, cheerfully scalable. |
| Training | Positive and patient wins; it's milder than most terriers but still keeps a private opinion. |
Common questions
Are Cesky Terriers rare?
Very — among the rarest recognised breeds worldwide, with only small numbers registered each year. Expect a waiting list and a conversation with a dedicated breeder.
Are Cesky Terriers good family dogs?
Yes — they're calmer and more tolerant than most terriers, affectionate with their family and generally fine with respectful children. They still appreciate early socialisation and their own quiet corner.
Do Cesky Terriers shed?
Barely — the silky coat sheds very little, which keeps the house clean but not the calendar. It grows continuously and needs clipping every six to eight weeks.
