What nobody tells you before you adopt

The hardest part of adopting is not the paperwork, it is the first fortnight. A rescued animal arrives without context: it does not know the house, the noises, the routine, or whether you are staying. Most settle in something like three stages — roughly three days of shutdown, three weeks of testing the rules, three months before the animal you actually live with shows up. Plan for the version in front of you on day four, not the one in the photo.

The second thing worth knowing is that age is usually the wrong filter. Adult and senior animals sit in shelters longest, and they are the easiest to read: what you see in the pen is close to what you get at home, whereas a kitten or a puppy is a guess with a decade attached. If you want a quiet house, adopt the quiet adult. Almost every regret we hear about starts with someone choosing on looks and hoping the temperament would follow.
