Herders and guardians do different jobs
Farm work splits into two very different jobs. Herding dogs like the Border Collie move stock with intense focus, biddability and stamina, and they are among the most trainable dogs alive — but that same drive turns destructive without an outlet. Livestock guardians like the Great Pyrenees are large, independent dogs bred to live with the flock and see off predators, calm but decidedly their own bosses. Match the dog to the task, give either type real physical and mental work, and remember that a herding breed in a quiet home needs a job invented for it — training, dog sports or long working walks — or it will find one you don't like.
