Sporting dogs

Sporting dogs — also called gundogs — were bred to work alongside hunters: finding birds, flushing them into the open, and retrieving what falls. Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels, Pointers, Brittanys and Vizslas are sporting breeds, and most keep the retriever's soft mouth and the spaniel's eager nose even as house pets.

Yes, among the best. They were bred to carry a shot bird gently in the mouth, and that soft-mouthed, biddable nature carries over into a gentle way with kids. Labradors and Golden Retrievers in particular are staple family dogs for exactly this reason.

A lot. These breeds were built to hunt all day, so a short walk leaves most of them understimulated. Plan on 60-plus minutes of real exercise daily — fetch, swimming, a long run — plus something to carry or retrieve, which taps the instinct directly.

Very. Bred to work closely with a handler and eager to please, sporting breeds respond fast to reward-based training and are common picks for guide-dog and detection work. The challenge is usually channeling their energy, not getting them to listen.

Most shed moderately to heavily, especially the double-coated retrievers, with a noticeable seasonal blowout each spring and autumn. A weekly brush keeps loose hair manageable; expect the vacuum to get more use than with a low-shedding breed.

Not the best fit for most of them. Their exercise needs are high enough that a yard or regular long outings matter more than square footage — a sporting dog in a small flat needs a committed daily exercise routine to stay content.
