Working dogs

Working dogs were bred for physical jobs — guarding property, pulling sleds and carts, water rescue — which is why the group runs to big, strong breeds like the Rottweiler, Bernese Mountain Dog, Great Dane, Dobermann and Siberian Husky. Most still carry the strength, drive and independence their original job demanded.

Usually not the easiest starting point. Many working breeds are large, strong-willed and were bred to think for themselves — a guard dog's instincts or a Husky's independence need a confident, consistent handler who can commit to real training from puppyhood.

Many are, once trained and socialised — Bernese Mountain Dogs and Boxers are famously gentle with their own families. The group also includes naturally protective breeds, so early socialisation matters more here than in most groups: an undertrained guardian breed can be overprotective around visitors.

More than most groups, simply on size — a Great Dane or Bernese Mountain Dog needs room to turn around, and a small flat gets cramped fast. A securely fenced yard helps, though a well-exercised working dog can adapt to less space than you'd expect.

Yes, more than most. Their size alone makes basic manners non-negotiable, and several breeds carry natural guarding instincts that need shaping early — a well-trained working dog is a calm, reliable companion; an untrained one can be a genuine handful.

Not by nature — most are loyal and even-tempered with proper training and socialisation. The group does include naturally protective, watchful breeds, though, so poor training or a lack of early socialisation shows up more visibly in a large, strong dog than in a small one.
