Longhair breeds carry a flowing, extended coat that needs real upkeep — Maine Coons, Ragdolls, Persians, Norwegian Forest Cats and Turkish Vans are longhairs, most bred in cold climates where a heavy double coat was a genuine advantage.

More than any other coat type — plan on brushing every day or close to it. Skip more than a few days and the undercoat starts to mat, which gets uncomfortable for the cat and can eventually need a vet or groomer to sort out.

Yes, and it's seasonal as much as constant — most longhairs blow their undercoat hard once or twice a year, usually in spring, on top of steady year-round shedding. Daily brushing during a blowout does more than any amount of vacuuming afterward.

Several are — Maine Coons and Ragdolls in particular are known as gentle giants, patient and easygoing around kids. The trade-off is the grooming commitment: a longhair coat around an active household needs someone reliably keeping up with the brush.

They can, since the coat is built for cold, but regular brushing that removes the undercoat helps them regulate better than a matted coat would. A cool, shaded space and fresh water matter more in summer for a longhair than for a shorthair.

The coat mats, and it happens faster than most new owners expect — loose undercoat tangles into dense knots close to the skin, which can pull painfully and trap moisture. Left long enough, matting usually means a vet or professional groomer, sometimes with a full shave-down.
