Designer & doodle breeds

Goldendoodles, cockapoos, puggles and the rest — the designer crosses people search for most, with what each one is a mix of and what to expect. A cross is not a fixed breed, so read the generations note before you fall for a photo.

What the generations mean

F1
A first cross — one purebred parent of each breed (e.g. Poodle × Labrador). Coat and looks vary most at this stage.
F1b
An F1 bred back to one parent breed — usually the Poodle — for a curlier, lower-shedding coat. Often the pick for allergy homes.
F2 · multigen
Two F1s crossed (F2), or later generations. Breeders use these to settle the coat and type, but nothing is guaranteed.

The thing to remember: a cross is not a breed with a fixed standard. Coat, size and temperament vary from pup to pup, most of all in the early generations — so choose on the individual dog and the breeder's health testing, not the label.
